Borescore.org is a clone of Zuckerberg’s proto-facebook site “facemash,” only instead of rating hot Harvard girls, you rate boring instagram photos. It even uses the same ELO ranking system as the original to generate the BoreScore. The project is the logical extension of my tumblr, boringinstagramphotos.tumblr.com

What initially seems like a dumb, straight-forward question, “Which photo is more boring?” unwittingly forces the user into an aesthetic decision, forcing them to pause and assign a value on these banal, familiar images that would otherwise be passed over and lost in the infinite social stream. It’s an ideal game for multiple people; When I presented it in a gallery setting a few weeks ago, people gathered around and had long, intense (drunken) discussions as to why, say, a ceiling fan is more boring than a subway sandwich.

As I write this, this image is the most boring on the site:

flash on skin gradients

All I wanted was a black background for my phone. I snapped a picture while covering the lens with my hand but forgot to turn the flash off.

Turned out pretty cool, though, so I experimented with different parts of my body for different effects (armpit, forehead, etc.) All images are unedited. I think the different colors are generated from the density of blood vessels, but don’t ask me, I’m no scientist.

made with iPhone 4s for phonearts

and then I made them into an animated gif:

the world’s most boring instagram photos

The World’s Most Boring Instagram Photos,

my new tumblr project. I’d love it if you took a look.

I’ve been thinking a lot about boredom lately.
